The University of Minnesota has an enrollment of approximately 51,000 students on its Twin Cities campus, with a total enrollment of 65,000 students across its five campus locations. The University is one of the largest in the country and ranks among the top universities in the United States in terms of quality of education; it also ranks among the top public institutions in terms of federal monies received. SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH

The School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota, a top-ranking research institution, has established a strong reputation for its educational programs as a result of more than half a century of teaching, research, and community service. The mission of the School of Public Health is to preserve and enhance the health of the public through education, research, and service programs designed to discover and transmit new knowledge aimed at the prevention of disease and disability, the improvement of health, and the planning, analysis, management, and improvement of systems for delivering health services. All degree programs offered by the School of Public Health and the Graduate School are fully accredited by appropriate national accrediting agencies. The School of Public Health is located within the Academic Health Center on the East Bank of the Twin Cities’ campus in Minneapolis.

DIVISION OF ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH SCIENCES

The Division of Environmental Health Sciences, a division within the School of Public Health, is concerned with the interface between people and their various environments. Key environmental health problems are addressed by faculty within this division who have a diversity of interests and expertise. Collaborative efforts within the division as well as with other divisions in the School, departments throughout the University, and outside institutions, further enhance their efforts. All academic programs within the Midwest Center for Occupational Health and Safety are also located within the Division of Environmental Health Sciences.

MINNEAPOLIS / ST. PAUL

The Twin Cities area and surroundings offer diverse cultural and recreational activities. Both the Minnesota Orchestra and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra are internationally known, as is the Tyrone Guthrie Theater. In addition, there are many other fine chamber music and theater groups, major art museums, and an excellent public radio network. Major musical and theatrical artists regularly visit the Twin Cities. Numerous parks in the Twin Cities’ area, and throughout the state, provide opportunities for a variety of outdoor sports such as golf, hiking, cycling, rollerblading, horseback riding, cross-country and downhill skiing, snow-shoeing and camping. Many of Minnesota’s 20,000 lakes are within the Twin Cities’ limits and are easily accessible for swimming, canoeing, sailing, and water skiing during summer, and ice-fishing and ice-skating during winter. University and numerous other local health club facilities also provide students the opportunity to play several indoor sports. In addition, major league teams – baseball, football, hockey, basketball, and soccer – are based in the Twin Cities.
